WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: late

Weather conditions:

Rise in temperature started at usual time, snow started to melt from 12.05, and warm weather with temperatures +2-3øC in the day time and -3-8øC at night established until 22.05. The weather turned cold at night on 22.05, and wind changed to aasterly. The weather improved slighttly on 29-31.05, and bird migration started on 31.05 with the main flyway passing by along the southern border of the area, 5-10 km from observation point. Snowstorm started on 2.06 and became the most intensitve on 3.06. Wind was gradually changing from northeastern to western, and temperatures dropped to -8øC at night. Birds were not seen during the snowstorm, including White-wagtails which had started building nest on 1.06 and Temminck's Stints which had been displaying near camp. A White Wagtail was found dead after the snowstorm under a stack of wood by ranger N.I. Rozhin. Snowstorm terminated on 4.06 during day.

Season temperature: cold
Season humidity: rainy
Date of 50% snow-cover: 11.06
Date of ice-break on rivers:
Date of final loss of snow: 15-17.06

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

low

Breeding conditions:

Birds started nesting later than usual due to snowstorm from 2-4 June. Bewick's Swans arrived in late May and started nesting on hillocks, which habitat had not been used for nesting previously according to our observations. Siberian White Cranes started breeding later, but raised chicks successfully. All known nests of Rough-legged Buzzards (clutches of 2, 2 and 5 eggs) were deserted, and some pairs did not attempt breeding. Waders were rare compared with previous years, and 3 nests only, one of Pectoral Sandpiper and 2 of Grey Pgalarope, were found on 21.06 on a transect of 40 km. The season was unfavourable for most species of birds.

Rodent dynamics:

Lemmings were not recorded, while Northern Red-backed and Grey-sided voles were seen only in fishemens' cabins.
